Excursion Report on Semester VI (2025 Batch)

Date: 3rd & 4th April 2025
Venue: Department of Geography, Rammohan College

The Department of Geography, Rammohan College, organized a two-day academic excursion to Bolpur, West Bengal, on 3rd and 4th April 2025. A total of 22 students from Semester VI participated, accompanied by four faculty members and one non-teaching staff. The journey began at Prantik Railway Station, marking the start of an enriching academic experience aimed at integrating theoretical knowledge with practical, on field learning. The purpose of the excursion was to deepen students’ understanding of cultural, environmental, and physical geography through direct exposure. During the two-day visit, several important sites were explored:

  1. Visva-Bharati University Campus – Students observed the harmonious integration of educational philosophy and environmental planning rooted in Rabindranath Tagore’s vision.
  2. Surul Rajbari – A historical landmark reflecting colonial-era architecture and regional socio-cultural evolution.
  3. Kankalitala Kali Bari – One of the sacred Shakti Peethas, which offered insights into the spiritual geography and cultural practices of the region.
  4. Sonajhuri Forest – A vibrant stretch of dry deciduous forest where students studied ecological features, biodiversity, and conservation-related aspects.
  5.
  6. Khoyai near the Kopai River – A significant site featuring badland topography formed by intense fluvial erosion of lateritic soil. This location served as an excellent field laboratory for understanding geomorphic processes and erosional features.

A key academic component of the excursion was a socio-economic survey in Palashboni village, predominantly inhabited by the Santhal tribal community.Students conducted structured interviews and collected primary data on demographics, occupational structure, education, and infrastructure. The findings highlighted that tourism, along with handicrafts and small-scale industries, forms the core of the village's economy.

Beyond academic goals, the excursion also fostered leadership skills, teamwork, and time management abilities among the students, as they coordinated activities, managed schedules, and collaborated effectively under the guidance of their teachers.

The overall experience was academically stimulating and personally enriching. It broadened students’ perspectives on regional diversity, human-environment relationships, and prepared them with practical skills for future geographical studies and field research.
