
RUSA
Rammohan College owes its origin to City College which is one of the oldest colleges in the West Bengal. City College had a Women’s department in the morning which was separately affiliated to University of Calcutta in 1961, and was named after Raja Rammohan Roy, the chief architect of 19th Century Bengal Renaissance.
Starting its journey in 1961, Rammohan College completed 50 years in June, 2011. We celebrated the Golden Jubilee of the college which has established itself as one of the first grade colleges in West Bengal.
The College was reaccredited (2nd cycle) by NAAC during November 2021 and on August 2018 the college got selected for getting Rs 2 crore grant from Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) for the purpose of
1) Creation of new facilities
2) Renovation/upgradation of existing facilities and
3) Procurement of new equipments/ facilities














Outcome of RUSA:
Rammohan College has always had the vision of improving its Infrastructure & Facilities for Dispensing Quality Education at this Women-Centric Institution. With funding from RUSA the College has successfully translated many of its dreams to reality.
Infrastructural development: Creation of new facilities
- Vertical extension of the New Science Building has been carried out and one 80 capacity, four 50 capacity new Classrooms, new library, new general Teachers’ room have been created. This meets the ever increasing need for classroom space keeping in mind the new 4years NEP syllabus implemented in the UG courses from 2023.
- Numbers of toilets are configured to fulfill basic needs of staff and students (both UG and PG) of the campus.
- In this fast moving world of decreasing morality, the college attempts to inculcate, in our students, the ethics and values of a once humanitarian world that prioritized morals over money. To this end, the college conducts a Compulsory Value added Course for first year students in the newly added floors in order to create awareness, conviction and commitment of the students to social and moral values for improving the quality of life through education following NEP guidelines.
- College even now able to organize NSS camps in the newly added floors without disturbing daily academic and administrative activities of the institution.
Infrastructural development: Renovation/upgradation of existing facilities
- The dining hall of the hostel requires renovation on urgent basis and the said fund resolved the problem and benefitted the inmates enormously.
- Canteen has been established at New Science Building and staff, students, guest teachers of PG sections are benefitted a lot by this initiative.
- Roof top solar plant has been established to produce renewable energy that has been utilized in the newly added floors.
- Also elevator has been installed using RUSA fund at New Science Building to provide facility not only staff and students in common but also it may be considered as first step towards the development of barrier free environment for physically challenged people.
- With the help of RUSA fund the auditorium has been completed. This has been utilized to organize more seminars and workshops to aid our students in learning from the eminent personalities in their respective fields. This will result in a collaborative learning space where young minds will interact with experienced minds and learn from them. This may also help our teaching faculty to establish academic collaboration with teachers of other colleges and universities, as recommended by the NAAC Peer Team.
- RUSA fund has been utilized constructively to renovate CCSEA recognized animal house that has been visited by many Higher Education institutes as a part of the curriculum of both UG and PG studies.
- RUSA fund also has been utilized to develop a room for Central Instrument facilities. Department of Zoology has successfully conducted hands-on training workshop in the college for the students of several colleges, universities and research institutes using BOOST, WB-DST funded equipments and this facility.
- The teachers of this college are able to execute larger number of minor and major research projects with the help of the enriched laboratory facilities.
Academic development: Procurement of new equipments
- RUSA grant has facilitated both our teachers and students by providing them with a varied range of latest laboratory equipments.
For instance:
- the Rotary shaker has been utilized in the lipid based practicals, Horizontal Laminar Air Flow for microbial culture in the Department of Botany;
- Analytical balance for the weighing of fine chemicals, Platinum Electrode, Silver Electrode, Glass Electrode for the determination of conductivity in Department of Chemistry;
- Abney Level, Auto Level, Dumpy Level, Transit Theodolite, Prismatic Compass and Soil Test Kit with salinity meter for the field work in Department of Geography;
- Digital Lux Meter and Analogue spirometer for the physiological parameter analysis in Department of Physiology;
- Autoclave for the general laboratory practices in Department of Botany , Department of Physiology and Department of Zoology;
- IV Characteristic of a tunnel diode and instrument to study PE hysteresis of ferroelectric crystal for UG CBCS practical in Department of Physics;
- pH meter for buffer preparation, Electrophoresis Power Supply Unit and Mini Horizontal Gel electrophoresis system for protein separation, Centrifuge for sample separation, Egg incubator for laboratory purposes in Department of Zoology
- Olympus Light Microscopes have considerably enhanced the teaching learning process at the undergraduate level in the Botany, Physiology and Zoology department.
For the third phase of allotment which will be Rs.5000000/- the college plans to utilize it for overall renovation of Hostel, purchase of books following CBCS/NEP guidelines, purchase of equipments for the upgradation of gymnasium and purchase of computers, networking devices and licensed software for further development of the IT infrastructure in the college.
The overall impact of the RUSA grant thus may be reflected by the improved academic ambience for our students and the successful implementation of academic diversification and expansion.
The dining hall of the hostel requires renovation on urgent basis and the said fund paucity of adequate water supply for the hostel inmates especially during the summer months has been a nightmare for many years and installation of the deep tube well with submersible pump has provided an alternative source that has resolved the problem and benefitted the inmates enormously.

by three important Science Departments of the College, Botany, Chemistry and Zoology to upgrade their pre-existing/new laboratories. This has helped the Departments to introduce post graduate teaching from the session 2016-17. The courses are all running successfully. This is a huge achievement by the College in expanding its academic vista.
The overall development of students lies not only in their academic enrichment but also in possessing a healthy mind and body. This has become more important as in todays complex world where the students face stress from every corner of their lives. RUSA funds have been utilized to upgraded its gymnasium facility both in the College campus and hostel where the students can spend useful hours during their off-time, in improving the status of their physical and mental health.
The overhauling of power supply for distribution to newly constructed Roma Chaudhuri building has enabled electrical connectivity for this currently three storeyed building hosting several departments of the College.
For high speed campus-wide intranet and a secure internet access, the extension of connectivity to R.C. building and installation of 15 mbps leased line for 2015-2020 has been carried out thereby benefitting students, teachers and researchers at College.
College Library has been enriched with a huge new collection of books and journals utilizing RUSA fund.
Some of other Departments like Microbiology, Physics, Statistics, Mathematics and Economics have also upgraded their dry/computer laboratories utilizing RUSA funds.
Canteen has been established at New Science Building and staff, students, guest teachers of PG sections are benefitted a lot by this initiative.
Roof treatment has been carried out for both New Science Building and Hostel kitchen area ensuring safety, preventing water seepage and consequent damage.
Hostel kitchen area and dining space has been modernized using RUSA funds.
BM SPSS Statistics package have been procured for academic use by the Departments of Statistics, Sociology and Economics.
