WELCOME TO THE DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY
The Department of Geography is one of the eminent and prestigious departments of the college. The Department is also one of the oldest in the college, the practical based department started its journey with pass graduate programme in 1961 and Honours course was introduced in March, 1985.
It is one of the departments with a high student enrolment, admirable success rate in University examinations, a significant progression to higher education and professional placements. Many of them have qualified UGC-NET, School Service Commission, and Public Service Commission, and are well placed in educational field.
The Department of Geography, Rammohan College is well-equipped with modern classrooms with ICT facilities, a Laboratory with tracing facilities and a GIS Laboratory quipped with sufficient number of computers along with internet facility. The departmental assets include a prestigious collection of topographical sheets, satellite images, air photo, specimens of rocks and minerals. The Department has modern and advanced surveying instruments, soil testing kits and weather instruments. Department has a two Seminar Libraries in each building, old and new. It is well stocked with text books in both Bengali and English and reference books in English.
The Department organizes annual excursions and day-long trips for Honours and General students, departmental seminars, workshops, poster competition, news paper cutting contest and special invited lectures. Students of the department enthusiastically take part in inter college poster competitions and seminars. The Department hosts Fresher’s welcome for new comers and Farewell programme for the outgoing students. Parent-Teacher meetings are held regularly for better communication and feedback.
The Community Club of the department is named “Community Crew”. The aim is to make students aware of their social responsibilities. The Crew is active in environmental awareness programmes and social work. The students of the Department are associated with the publication of the departmental annual wall magazine named “GEOGRAPHIA.” There is also an ex students alumnae association of the Department called “Anandadhara”

Department of Geography of Rammohan College set up a weather station at New Science Bulding campus in association with Indian Meteorological Department, Kolkata. It is very unique and only weather station in North Kolkata area. At present the station is capable to measure maximum, minimum temperature, Relative humidity, Air pressure, wind direction and rainfall data. In near future we will be able to share the wind velocity data also.

Laboratory Facilities: Department of geography provides a well equipped laboratory facilities to the students with necessary instruments like Theodolite, Dumpy-level, Prismatic compass, Clinometer , Abneys level, Digital thermometer, Higrometer, Barometer, Laser distance measuring tape, Tracing tables, Topo Sheets, Satellite Imageries, Soil kit, different rocks and minerals specimens etc.
Seminar Library: Department of Geography has two seminar libraries one is in old building and other in new science building. Lending facilities are available in both the Libraries. The libraries have good collection of subject oriented books and as well as books on contemporary issues are also available. The total number of books in Seminar Library is 295, compact disc 06 and District Gazetteers 06.
Other Resources: Department has a wealthy collection of learning resources like maps, , models, charts and Atlas with smart class room and wifi facilities etc for the holistic development of the student.

The Department of Geography, Rammohan College, organized a two-day academic excursion to Bolpur, West Bengal, on 3rd and 4th April 2025. A total of 22 students from Semester VI participated, accompanied by four faculty members and one non-teaching staff.The journey began at Prantik Railway Station, marking the start of an enriching academic experience aimed at integrating theoretical knowledge with practical, on field learning.The purpose of the excursion was to deepen students’ understanding of cultural, environmental, and physical geography through direct exposure. During the two-day visit, several important sites were explored:
Beyond academic goals, the excursion also fostered leadership skills, teamwork, and time management abilities among the students, as they coordinated activities, managed schedules, and collaborated effectively under the guidance of their teachers.
The overall experience was academically stimulating and personally enriching. It broadened students’ perspectives on regional diversity, human-environment relationships, and prepared them with practical skills for future geographical studies and field research.

The Department of Geography at Rammohan College observed Environmental Pollution Prevention Day with great enthusiasm and purpose on the 2nd of December, 2024. The event aimed to raise awareness about pressing environmental issues and foster innovative solutions to combat pollution.
The program was graced by the presence of eminent speakers, including:
The event commenced with an inaugural address by Prof. Manas Paul, who emphasized the significance of collective efforts in pollution prevention and sustainable living. Following this, Prof. Madhumita Chatterjee delivered an insightful presentation on the impacts of air and water pollution on urban ecosystems, inspiring students to take an active role in environmental conservation. The keynote speech by Dr. Sibnath Sarkar focused on innovative technologies and community-driven initiatives for pollution mitigation, which was highly appreciated by all attendees.
A major highlight of the event was the participation of 16 Semester-1 students from the department, who showcased their creative and research-driven perspectives through poster presentations. Each student prepared a poster highlighting critical environmental issues such as plastic pollution, air quality degradation, and climate change. The posters not only displayed the students' understanding of environmental challenges but also proposed practical solutions to address them.
The event concluded with an interactive session, where the speakers engaged with students, addressing their queries and providing valuable feedback on their posters. Certificates of participation were distributed to all students to recognize their efforts and contributions.
As a fitting culmination to the event, a tree-planting ceremony was held in the college campus. Faculty members, students, and the distinguished speakers jointly planted a sapling, symbolizing the department’s dedication to environmental preservation and sustainability.
The celebration of Environmental Pollution Prevention Day was a resounding success, fostering awareness, creativity, and a collective sense of responsibility among the participants. The Department of Geography is committed to organizing more such initiatives to inspire and empower future generations in the fight against environmental degradation.
Wall magazine: Department of Geography publish a wall magazine naming “GEOGRAPHIA.” The magazine published twice in a year. The topic of Magazine related to various contemporary issues. This year (2022) the wall magazine was inaugurated by the Principal of Rammohan College on 11th April, 2022. The topic for the wall magazine this year was – “Urban Environment.” Students from every semester contributed poems, drawings, write up etc. for the wall magazine.
The first issue of Magazine was published on 5th September, 2019. The topic was Pollution. Due to the Covid pandemic situation wall magazine was not published.
Special Lecture Series: The department occasionally organizes special lectures by eminent teachers, scholars in relevant contemporary issues.
