Amidst the turmoil of Freedom Struggle, a separate division of City College for girl students only, had its inception in1943.There was no separate department called Political Science rather, Economics and Political Science used to offer courses jointly, having three papers for each. In the year,1952,owing to the huge number of students a separate morning wing of City College was established as Rammohan College. By the early sixties, Department of Political Science had its own separate entity.
A name must be remembered here, Sri Prabhat Kumar Sarbadhikari. Originally he belonged to the discipline of Physics, he attained a degree in Political Science just to be an eligible part of the Department which would enable him to put his utmost effort to strengthening the newborn Department of Political Science. Few more names must be mentioned, who had later put in relentless effort to attain the heights the department has enjoyed for decades, Diptirekha Guha, Sushil Kumar Sen, Tapas Basu, Shishir Kumar Sanyal, Pabitra Gupta, Ratna Gupta and specially Debasis Chakraborty. This last name deserves to be mentioned with great respect. With his tireless effort many new arrangements were initiated in the Department including the establishment of Departmental Seminar Library. He even gifted a new almirah to keep the books in a systematic order and provided a good number of books which remain a pride of the department library. The responsibility for setting up a new library was entirely shouldered by Professor Debasis Chakraborty.
Department of Political Science of Rammohan College is still diligently following the footsteps of their predecessors!
The Department offers a three year Honours Degree Course (C.U. Syllabus). It also offers a two year General Degree Course (C.U. Syllabus) to cater to Honours students of varied subjects Bengali, Sanskrit, History, Education, Philosophy, Geography, Economics. At present the Department has four full time professors and one part time professor.
The Department strictly follows the CBCS syllabus. Some of the elective courses we offer are Understanding South Asia, Understanding Global Politics, Human Rights in a Comparative Perspective and Understanding the Legal System for Honours students. For General students we offer Indian Foreign Policy, Human Rights: Theory and Indian Context, Elementary Dimensions of Research and more. The papers are selected so as to equip students with basic knowledge of the subject in legal, research and other fields, which they might put to use in future.

The Department of Political Science has a rich stock of books pertaining to the need of students and teachers. At the moment we have approx. 250 books in the Seminar Library. Apart from this, students have access to books in the Reference Section and Main Library. Year on year this priceless collection will continue to grow.
The Department strives to ensure excellence beyond academics. We encourage our students prosper in extra-curricular activities like, classical dance and music; art and poetry. Some have shown their talent in inter-college paper presentations, debates, inter-college elocution and online poster competition. Our students also participate in College social service programs like the NSS and sports through NSO, in good numbers. Active class participation is encouraged through paper presentations and informal debates, these, we feel are necessary for the holistic development of our students.
The Department of Political Science served as CU exams zonal centre from 2009 to 2017 which involved distribution, evaluation, scrutiny, submission of marks and review of 3000+ answer scripts every year. We had a seminar in collaboration with the history department in 2016 winter session where Prof. Rukmini of the Ambedkar University was the speaker. The departmental publication titled ‘Contemporary Social, Economic and Political Issues - An Overview’ came out in January 2019. It continues to be a relevant source book for both the teaching staff and the students.
