What is Tele MANAS?
Tele MANAS is the National Tele Mental Health Programme. It stands for Tele Mental Health Assistance and the Networking Across States (Tele MANAS). It is the digital arm of the District Mental Health Programme (DMHP).
Need for Tele MANAS?
- Over 11 crore individuals in India suffer from Mental Health disorders and almost 80% of them don’t seek mental healthcare.
- Over 1 lakh people end their life by suicide every year.
- For every suicide 20 other people attempt to end their lives for various reasons which can be addressed and prevented.
- Access to Mental healthcare is a basic human right.
- No individual suffering from mental illness should face discrimination.
- Most mental health issues do not require specialized care.
- Most mental health issues can be helped by other trained healthcare providers.
- In the wake of the Covid-19 Pandemic, there has been a significant increase in mental distress and related psychological issues.

- To enhance health service capacity in order to deliver accessible and timely mental healthcare through a tele-mental health network support system.

What are the services offered by Tele MANAS?
- Tele Counselling by trained counsellors.
- Tele Consultation by Mental Health professionals when required.
- Referral Services to other Mental Health Establishments such as Medical Colleges, DMHP services and speciality institutes.
Who can reach out to Tele MANAS?
- Any individual with mental health issues can reach out to Tele MANAS services for help.
- Family members of persons with mental health issues can reach out for help.
- Grass-root health care providers/community health providers i.e., Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs), and community volunteers from the community can reach out to Tele MANAS on behalf of an individual or individuals in that community with mental health issues.
Who will be providing services in Tele MANAS?
- Tier 1: Counsellors and the Mental Health professionals of the State Tele MANAS Cells.
- Tier 2: In-Person Services by Mental Health Professionals at Public Health Facilities by DMHP, Mentoring Institutes. Primary Healthcare providers: MBBS primary care doctors (PCD), AYUSH healthcare providers, and Nurses to provide collaborative care to the caller.
Will the information provided by the caller be confidential?
- Yes details given by the caller are confidential and the counsellor or the mental health professionals shall not divulge any personal details or information to any other person who asks for the details.
- In case the person i.e., caller has immediate suicide risk or there is risk of harm to others due to the person, family members or those who can help the individual to take steps to reduce harm to the individual.
Are Emergency Services offered?
- In case of Psychiatric emergencies such as suicide risk or aggression will require consultation by doctors in the hospital.
- Tele MANAS counsellors and Mental health professionals will advise on the centres where the person can be taken for treatment.
